The Journey of Alhamdu Ademasajida SACCO
In the vibrant town of Habaswein, Wajir County, a group of resilient women entrepreneurs is rewriting the narrative of economic empowerment in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL). Established in 2018 as a modest self-help group and formally registered as a SACCO in 2022, Alhamdu Ademasajida SACCO Ltd brings together 120 members—nearly three-quarters of whom actively engage in traditional tie-and-dye textile production.
Despite their deep artisanal expertise, the group faced significant operational bottlenecks, including manual production, informal record-keeping, and restricted market access beyond their immediate locality.
Through targeted mentorship under the Kenya Jobs and Economic Transformation (KJET) Project with mentor Geoffrey Kasili, the SACCO developed a multi-dimensional Growth Plan:
- Standardized Operations: Transitioning from manual estimates to precise dye measurement practices.
- Financial Discipline: Adopting structured bookkeeping, cashbooks, and budgeting tools.
- Governance Restructuring: Defining operational leadership roles and posting organizational charts on the production floor.
Today, Alhamdu Ademasajida SACCO stands as a model for how structured business mentorship elevates grassroots self-help groups into competitive, women-led commercial enterprises.
